Daevid Allen's University Of Errors: Money Doesn't Make It
(InnerSPACE Records)

Yes, this is THE Daevid Allen, the chief Pot Head Pixie in charge of the
Gong interplanetary spaceship. But even though we remain on the grounds of
hallucinogenically altered rock music, University of Errors has little to do
with Gong. In this new band, Allen (vocals and guitars) is accompanied by
californian musicians : Josh Pollock on guitars, Michael Clare on bass and
Pat Thomas on drums.

Professor Allen and his students offer a very accomplished first record,
Money Doesn't Make It (on InnerSPACE Records). The band already has its own
distinctive sound, drawing from the European musical heritage Gong largely
contributed to build in the late 60's - early 70's, but also from
California's psychedelic explorations and from the more contemporary sounds
of today's space rock bands. The spotlight here is on the guitar - no
keyboards on this CD - and on Allen's hallucinating (and hallucinated?)
vocals. You might doubt it is really him when hearing the title track that
oepns the album, as he sings in a very low register. But you will find that
off-the-wall frenzy-man from Gong on "Mullumbimby Mother", a great syllabial
(?!) delirium. Musical themes remain simple and catchy (you might hum "Money
Doesn't Make It" for some time), quality extended jamming abound (like on
"Prof. Improbable's Preambule"). But the best quality this CD has is that,
clocking at 44 minutes, it avoids any longish passages or blatant fillers. I
prefer a short but satisfying trip and this CD is just that. But fans of
Gong should be aware that they are in for a surprise.

So let Professor Allen teach you to get rid of your material possessions
("Burn Your Money / Free That Child") and enroll at the University of
Errors. This record proves that Daevid Allen can still change his skin. More
than a side-project, University Of Errors has the spark to become his new
full-time band.
