DAEVID ALLEN'S UNIVERSITY OF
ERRORS:
Money Doesn't Make It CD - 12.99
Best group-based album from the Gong maestro for a long
time, as Allen is
accompanied by members of the modern Krautrock-influenced
out fit Mushroom.
A set of twelve tracks reveals some typically angular
Allen compositions
with trademark wordplay an insightful lyrics while the
musical backing is
largely given over to dual lead guitars, space guitar,
glissando guitar,
bass and drums, plus flute on a couple of tracks. The
most remarkable thing
is that the music is just pure Allen and can't be
classified as rock or
fusion or Krautrock or psychedelic, etc - rather, it has
elements of all of
this but comes out melodic, dynamic, accessible
fascinating and entirely
fresh, but unmistakably Daevid at work. Mostly
song-based, there's little
room for instrumental stretching, but it's a fine, varied
set of
compositions and playing.
