DAVID ALLEN'S UNIVERSITY OF ERRORS - Money Doesn't Make it
(US InnerSPACE records 99)
This is one of my favourite artists ever, from the jazz trips of the early Gong LPs, to the weird sound loops and space poetry of New York Gong; this man holds a special place for me. One of the times that I saw him he made the audience hold hands to 'raise the vibration' before he would play a note! Yes Daevid's the real thing. On this latest recording he's got himself a really tight group of musicians about him, giving a fresh modern sound yet with knowing glances back to more hazy times. These days he is more likely to sing about anti-materialism than pot head pixies but he still has a really good way with words. As always his
glissando guitar sounds ethereal and is the anchor for many of the songs. Nicely meandering guitars score most of the tunes but you can always make out the words of the songs, because with an artist such as this the lyrics are important. He still has valid political and social comments to make.
Remember this man was at the barricades in Paris in the 60's. Good c.d. respect is due to the man for his constant commitment. Can't say anything else but this c.d. is recommended. Go and buy it, you'll like it!. -Martin Jones

The University of Errors- Money Does'nt Make It
I have been listening to this album a lot lately, and it has really
grown on me. I think it is an excellent piece of music. I love the song about the dude who "slips into his computer." Having seen them live, I love this band!
Its trippy, and it has an edge to it that appeals to guitar rock side, but
Daevid's message on this album, is consistant with his entire body of work.

Daevid Allen's University of Errors latest album is really good -- one
of the better CDs I've heard this year. I think it's better than just
about everything he did with Gong.
Anybody else heard it? -Matt P

I find the new album to be more focused and less filled with weirdness
for weirdness' sake than most Gong projects. I do really like a few
Gong albums, but I think that Allen has made his best work here. -Matt P

The final entry here is from Matt's (last name unknow) top 25 of 1999 which was posted to alt.music.alternative newsgroup. I found the context of the other entries to the 25 to be very interesting so listed some of them following the review. -

18. Daevid Allen's University of Errors -- Money Doesn't Make It
Soft Machine founding member and ex-Gong frontman Daevid Allen teams up
with musicians a generation younger than he (the guys from Mushroom)
for this project, an album a lot better than anybody still following
Allen's career had any business expecting. It's Quirky,
tongue-in-cheek and brilliantly played, with some blistering guitar
work from Allen more remeniscient of Robert Fripp's sound than anything
on a Gong record. One good thing about this CD is that it prompted me
to go back and listen to all of my Gong CDs, and I found this one to be
better than nearly all of them.
